What a host bar in Korea is — and finding one in Haeundae

You sit in a private room, a male host joins your table, and you drink and talk. There is a karaoke system in the room if you want to sing. That is the shape of the evening.

Searching in English for a Haeundae host bar is confusing, and the reason is worth stating plainly. Most of what comes back is either a pub-crawl tour, a general Busan nightlife listicle, or a page on a hacked domain that was never a real business. Mixed in with that are news articles about an entirely different industry, which is where a lot of the confusion starts. None of those tell you where an actual venue is or what happens inside it.

So this page is built around things you can check before you come. The address is 24 Gunam-ro 18beon-gil, basement level, in Haeundae-gu. There is a convenience store (CU) on the ground floor of the building. The signage reads Velvet HOST BAR. The photos below were taken in August 2026, unretouched, at this address — not borrowed from another venue.

In Korean this kind of place is called a host bar (호스트바) and is often shortened to hoppa (호빠). The staff who sit with guests are called seonsu (선수). If you search in Korean, those are the words that will find venues; in English, "host bar" and "host club" are both used for the same thing.

VELVET serves women guests. One room is used by one party, and we do not seat strangers together under any circumstances.

Private rooms, no shared tables

One room is used by one party. We do not seat strangers together, and that holds even when the venue is busy.

This matters more for visitors than it might sound. If you are in a country where you do not speak the language, the thing that makes an evening uncomfortable is not the language itself — it is being watched while you work it out. In a private room you can put a translation app on the table and nobody minds.

Coming alone is fine. A single guest gets a room the same way a group does; we do not move you to a counter or ask you to wait for others. Groups are welcome too, but a larger party needs a larger room to be free, so messaging ahead makes it certain.

There is no dress code. Whatever you were wearing while walking around Haeundae is fine. You do need to bring ID.

Open 11pm to 9am — the closing time is the point

VELVET opens at 11pm and closes at 9am. In Haeundae, very few comparable venues stay open that far into the morning.

The difference is at the closing end, not the opening one. Most places in this category start clearing up somewhere in the small hours, which is frequently the point at which an evening has finally settled into itself. Running until 9am means nobody is watching a clock.

That makes this a second or third stop rather than a first one. Dinner runs long, you walk the beach, and by the time you are free most places have shut — that hour is when we are opening, not closing.

The flip side is that we are not open during the day. We close at 9am and open again at 11pm. If you were planning an afternoon visit, this is the thing to know first.

In figures: 10 hours a night, six nights a week — we are closed on Sunday nights — and 5 minutes on foot from Haeundae Station. The walk and the hours were confirmed by the venue in October 2026 — ask if you are planning around the edges of them.

Messages are a separate matter and have no time limit. Write during the day when we are closed and we will still read it and reply. Korea is UTC+9 — the same as Japan, one hour ahead of most of China and Singapore, eight to nine hours ahead of the UK depending on the season — but you do not need to work any of that out before writing.

How the language works

Write to us in English and we will read it and reply using translation. You do not need any Korean.

Being exact about this: VELVET does not have fluent English-speaking staff on site. Plenty of venues write "English OK" and then you arrive and nothing works — we would rather you knew in advance than found out at the door. What we do is translate in both directions. For booking and for questions, that is entirely sufficient.

At the table it works the same way, through a translation app. Knowing that beforehand is most of what makes it comfortable, and the private room is what makes it unselfconscious. If you do speak Korean, you are welcome to call instead.

People do spend whole evenings here through translation. An imperfect conversation is not the same thing as a bad evening.

What happens, in order

  1. Message us Tell us your party size, roughly when you want to come, and whether it is your first visit. English is fine. Same-day messages are fine, and you can write while we are closed.
  2. Arrive 24 Gunam-ro 18beon-gil — the building with a CU convenience store on the ground floor. The entrance is the stairs going down. Message us if you cannot find it.
  3. Shown to a room You are seated first, before anything else happens. Put your things down and settle in. The room is yours alone and has a karaoke system.
  4. Choose a host You see who is working that evening and choose. You can also request someone in advance. If you have no idea who to pick, say so — describe the mood you want instead.
  5. Settle up Card, bank transfer and cash all work. Whether a card issued abroad goes through depends on the card, so ask when you message us. A pick-up within Haeundae can be arranged.

Five minutes on foot from Haeundae Station

Take Busan Metro Line 2 to Haeundae Station and walk toward the beach. It is under five minutes.

Come out of the station, follow the main road (Gunam-ro) downhill toward the sea, and turn into 18beon-gil. That road is the main commercial street in Haeundae — busy, well lit at night, and hard to get lost on. Getting the direction right is most of it.

Use the ground-floor convenience store to identify the building. The signage is above the entrance and the way in is the staircase going down. First-time visitors walk past that basement entrance fairly often, which is why the photos are on this page.

From Gimhae International Airport, take the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail to Sasang and change to Line 2, which runs straight through to Haeundae Station — one change from the airport. A taxi is simpler with luggage, and arriving late is not a problem since we are open all night.

If you are staying at a hotel in Haeundae you can walk, or we can pick you up — within Haeundae only. We do not drive outside the district.

This page covers the venue itself. If you want to know what a Korean host bar actually involves, read what happens in the room. For what the bill is made of, see the four cost items. If you are coming for the first time, finding the basement entrance will save you a phone call.

Map and the way in

VELVET is on the basement floor of the building with a CU store at street level. When you see the sign in the photo below, go in and take the stairs down.

Questions we get

Does anyone there speak English?

We work through translation rather than claiming fluency. There is no fluent English speaker on site, so we do not write "English spoken" — we would rather you knew in advance. Send a message in English and we will translate it, read it and reply the same way. At the table it works through a translation app, and because the room is private nobody is watching you use it. Booking and questions work fine this way.

Can I come on my own?

Yes. A single guest gets a private room the same way a group does, and we never seat strangers together. Visitors travelling alone do come here. You will not be moved to a counter, asked to wait for other people, or given a smaller room because there is one of you. Groups are welcome too, though a large party needs a large room free, so message ahead if there are several of you.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the party size, the arrangement and how long you stay, which is why there is no figure on this page — any single number would be wrong for most people. What we will do is explain which items the bill is made of, and if you tell us a budget range we will tell you what is possible inside it. Asking about cost without booking anything is completely fine.

Do I need to book?

Yes, please book before you come. Send the number of people and roughly when you will arrive, and a room is held for you. There are a limited number of rooms and they do fill at some hours. We answer messages around the clock, so there is no bad time to ask, and same-day messages are fine. If you are coming with several people, say so, so that a large enough room is held.

What do I need to bring?

ID — a passport if you are visiting from abroad. This is checked without exception because of the age requirement, and it needs to be the document itself rather than a photo of it. People leave passports in hotel safes, so check before you set out. Beyond that, there is no dress code. If you plan to pay with a card issued abroad, ask first whether it goes through; some cash as a backup is the safe option.

Can you pick me up from my hotel?

Within Haeundae, yes. Message us the hotel name or where you are and we will arrange it. This is useful at night or if there are several of you. We do not drive outside Haeundae, so if you are staying elsewhere in Busan, make your way to Haeundae first and then message us — pick-up works from there.

If your question is not here, ask us on WhatsApp and we will answer it directly. Messages are read outside opening hours too.
